Homeowners often assume constant operation means something is broken. In a climate like this one, a properly sized system on a 98-degree afternoon may run nearly continuously and that is expected — long cycles remove more humidity and hold temperature steadier than short bursts.
The distinction that matters is whether the house is holding its setpoint while the system runs, or slowly losing ground.
When long runtimes are normal
On the hottest afternoons the load on your home approaches the capacity of the equipment. A system that runs long and maintains temperature is doing its job. Homes with large west-facing glass, limited attic insulation, or heavy afternoon sun exposure reach that point earlier in the day.
When it signals a problem
Concern is warranted when the system runs continuously and the indoor temperature drifts upward, when supply air is barely cool, when humidity stays high, or when runtimes have grown noticeably longer than previous summers under the same conditions.

Common underlying causes
Restricted airflow, low refrigerant charge, a dirty condenser coil, duct losses in a hot attic, and equipment that is losing capacity all produce longer runtimes. So do envelope factors: attic insulation, air leakage, and window exposure.
What you can check
- Replace the filter and reassess after 30 minutes of operation
- Confirm every supply register is open and returns are clear
- Clear loose debris from around the outdoor unit with the system switched off, without opening the cabinet
- Compare the thermostat reading to a separate thermometer
- Note the outdoor temperature when the problem is worst
- Check whether shades or blinds on sun-exposed windows are closed at peak
Short cycling is the opposite problem
If the system starts and stops every few minutes, that is short cycling, and it is a different concern. It leaves humidity behind, wears start components, and often traces back to oversizing, thermostat placement, electrical faults, or airflow restriction.
